ADDRESSING FOOD INSECURITIES

Too many families in Central Florida face the harsh reality of food insecurity, struggling to access the nutrition they need. The United Foundation of Central Florida’s Food Distribution Program works tirelessly to provide essential meals, supporting our community's well-being and helping families regain stability during challenging times.

UFCF Food Distribution Program

The UFCF Food Distribution/Drive/Drop Program, launched in 2015 to address food insecurity in the Pine Hills community and surrounding areas. Initially renting vans to distribute food, we expanded to hosting Community Family Appreciation events and large-scale food drives, blessing over 750 families by 2019. The onset of COVID-19 in 2020 revealed a dire need for food resources as job loss, increased hunger, and homelessness surged. In response, we intensified our efforts, partnerED with Dr. Trisha Bailey and as of August 2024, we have distributed over 6.1 million meals, equivalent to 7.3 million pounds, significantly impacting Central Florida's food security.

Since 2015, we’ve learned that food insecurity disproportionately affects communities of color, with 21% of Black individuals and 11% of white individuals experiencing it in 2021. The pandemic exacerbated these disparities, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing support.

We have discovered this during our time addressing Food Insecurities since 2015:

  1. It is projected that 42 million people (1 in 8), including 13 million children (1 in 6), may experience food insecurity in 2021.

  2. Many of those most impacted by the pandemic were already food insecure or at risk of becoming food insecure before COVID-19, and their hardships have worsened since.

  3. Significant racial disparities in food insecurity that existed before COVID-19 persist in the pandemic's aftermath. In 2021, an estimated 21% of Black individuals (1 in 5) may experience food insecurity, compared to 11% of white individuals (1 in 9).

  4. Very low food security, a severe form of food insecurity characterized by reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns, has also likely increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
